Dr. Elie Khalil Karouny was born in Mouallakat, Zahlé, in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, into a close and devout Lebanese family. His father, Khalil, worked for the railway, and his mother, Alice Mahfouz, devoted herself to her family. Elie and his sister Lena both later became physicians. From childhood he was remembered as calm, smiling, generous and deeply contemplative.
He was drawn early to writing, music, theatre, spirituality and service to others. He completed his primary and secondary studies at the Orthodox College of the Annunciation in Beirut and developed fluency in Arabic, French and English. His wish to become a doctor grew from a desire to care for people in need.
The original website preserved video, audio, photographs and testimonies. The new archive gives each collection a dedicated, responsive home.
After his death on November 12, 1998, his family continued to preserve his writings, recollections and spiritual reflections. Two books were subsequently published, including The Sword Will Not Fall from My Hand and Light from the Heaven.
